Embracing a New Chapter in Charleston: Downsizing to an Upsized Life

After years of dreaming about it, my wife Mary Burt and I finally made the move to Charleston, South Carolina. Downsizing and starting fresh at 61 might seem daunting to some, heck it seemed daunting to us when we first talked about it.  But six months in, we realize it’s the adventure we’ve been craving.

For decades, family commitments kept us in North Carolina. We loved our life there and built a heck of a business.  We loved and cared for aging parents and watched our kids grow up, graduate, and start their own lives in far-off states. But deep down, we always had a soft spot for Charleston, a city and community rich with history and full of charm.

The decision to downsize wasn’t just about moving to a smaller space; it was about simplifying our lives and embracing new opportunities. Charleston’s historic charm, beautiful waterfronts, and friendly people made it the perfect choice. We were ready for a change, eager to meet new friends and dive into new experiences.

Mary Burt, a history buff, is thrilled to explore Charleston’s past. The city is a living museum with its historic homes, forts, and plantations. From Fort Sumter to the stunning gardens of Middleton Place, there’s so much to discover.

As for me, I’ve always been drawn to the water, and Charleston’s sailing scene is something I’ve wanted to experience for a long time. I’ve even started learning how to sail, and it’s been an absolute blast. Plus, the area is full of opportunities to pursue and continue my love of the active lifestyle. I recently completed a triathlon here and can’t wait to participate in more.

Professionally, I’m excited to bring my 20+ years of real estate experience to Charleston. Joining a top-notch team like Corcoran in this thriving market feels like the perfect fit. I’m eager to help others find their dream homes in this amazing city.

But it’s not just about work and hobbies. We’re looking forward to getting involved in the community and giving back. Whether it’s volunteering, mentoring, or just being active members of local organizations, we’re excited to make a positive impact.

It feels like we found the perfect place for this new chapter in our lives. It’s a chance to live fully, meet new people, and enjoy everything the Lowcountry has to offer. As we settle in, I’m reminded of a quote by C.S. Lewis: “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” Mary Burt and I are proof that it’s never too late to follow your dreams and create a life filled with joy and excitement.

Here’s to new beginnings and all the adventures that await us in Charleston!
